Using video traffic data collection methods has proven more cost-effective than sending 10 to 15 technicians to manually do intersection turning movement counts. It also provides flexibility and can avoid the headaches with rescheduling crews in the case of bad weather or wanting to get weekend counts in addition to week-day counts.
If bad weather is encountered the camera system can be left out recording and traffic counting done from video of the better / best weather day traffic was recorded. In addition video recording of traffic data collection provides engineers the opportunity to view traffic operations and gives context to the data.
In a variety of situations we have leveraged Bluetooth detection systems, which allows for collecting and evaluating “real-time” traffic data through the detection of anonymous Bluetooth signals emanating from vehicles originating from, destine to and moving through the project area.
Like video, Bluetooth detection can provide engineers the ability to observe travel speed and traffic operations within a corridor, not only during idea conditions, but also during bad weather and other events (crashes, holidays, and other times).
